Duna and Beyond

Launch 1-10: Savitskaya 1

8/31/2016

Picture
Year 1, day 208.
Project: Savitskaya
Mission Objectives:
  1. Enter Mun's SOI.
  2. Transmit scientific data back to Kerbin.

The upgraded facilities in the background allow us to build more complex vehicles.

The upper stage circularizes into an 80km parking orbit.
Picture
The R-3 upper stage can only put 1T into KTO, so the probe's engine completes the insertion burn.

After performing a brief fly-by, the probe has its orbital velocity rotated, sending it into an orbit around the sun.
Mission Summary:
  1. Enter Mun's SOI: success!
  2. Transmit scientific data back to Kerbin: success!

Unfortunately, our tracking station doesn't have equipment sensitive enough to communicate with the probe once it leaves Kerbin's SOI.

    Introduction and Mods

    The Rules

    1. Rocket launches must be fully automated using kOS and SmartParts.
    2. Launch vehicles must have self-contained guidance, and not rely on payloads.
    3. Long-duration, non-cryogenic  stages must use low-efficiency engines to simulate hypergolic fuels.
    4. Crewed vehicles must be flight-certified before they carry any crew.
    5. Crewed vehicles may not use SRBs.
    6. AntennaRange / USI LS (in K.I.A. mode) will be used.
    7. Missions must be progressive:
      1. Uncrewed before crewed.
      2. Suborbital/flyby before orbital.
      3. Orbital before landing.
    8. Launches are permitted every 23 days on Kerbin.
